The cannonade fury of Zoltan Bathory, Ivan Moody, Jeremy Spencer, Jason Hook and Chris Kael detonated onto Aftershock’s North stage on Sunday with the explosive force of a Five Finger Death Punch. As one of the most successful and top touring metal bands, the appropriately named Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP) holds nothing back when it comes to their well crafted and finely honed high energy stage presence.  Aftershock was no different; these five guys are a fully armed battery of MK 17 multi-caliber assault weapons.

Opening with “Under it and Over It,” followed by “Burn it Down” 5FDP let security know this is when they would earn their paycheck as they pulled body after body over the temporary metal barrier from a crowd swirling with intense velocity. At that moment the notion of what was expected morphs to a hyper-awareness and a thought, “this could go either way.” Security thinking the same asked the photographers to leave the pit area giving them the room needed to help ensure the safety for all. Security did an impressive job all weekend and survived this last go round of the North stage upon the conclusion of 5FDP’s amp’d set.

The fifth song of the set brought a slight rest to the torrential energy as 5FDP broke out into their badass version of Bad Company’s self-titled hit “Bad Company.”  5FDP included this track on their September 2009 release, War is the Answer, but more recently on the DVD, Disc 2 of their latest release, The Wrong Side of Heaven & The Righteous Side of Hell, Deluxe Edition. “Bad Company” is not the only song from the DVD, Disc 2. Every song on their setlist from Aftershock is available on the DVD, Disc 2.

Bad Company may have provided a brief breather but up next was “Burn MF.” Just the thought of the powerful guitar-fueled acceleration and the blinding sensatory rhythm heightens the senses providing the ammunition to stand up in the face of adversity or injustice and scream “Burn M___ F___.” With that said, imagine nineteen thousand sun-soaked, booze filled, dust covered fans packed in front of the stage as a scene from an old jungle movie where restless cannibalizing natives circle in a primal dance as they prepare for battle.

Fade to the next, cell phone flashlights filled the jam-packed stage front parcel of real estate, the light from that many phones was ominous as they lit up the night. People swaying, some crying, all were intense as “Remember Everything,” unfolds from the stage. This song as well as most of the songs on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of  The Wrong Side of Heaven & The Righteous Side of Hell, are used to bring awareness to the plight of the military veterans who have been mentally and emotionally scared by their active tour of duty. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) runs deep within those who have experienced hostile engagement during active duty and once home receive little help to learn to understand and deal with the fragmented pieces of their mind. Many end up homeless, addicted, or worse, dead.

5FDP is committed to raising awareness and have created a website 5FDP4VETS filled with information to get the word out. They are also currently raising funds through a Indiegogo campaign 5FDP4VETS – No One Gets Left Behind asking fans to donate to the cause and in return receive a limited addition 5FDP jersey designed by Zoltan. So far to date they have raised 505% of their original goal and are now over $214,722 with seven days left. If you are interested in helping support this cause, please see the links at the bottom of this article.

The final four songs of the set included; “Coming Down,” “Never Enough” (a personal favorite), and ending with “The Bleeding” and “House of the Rising Sun.”

The special chemistry between the lyrical artistry and guitar mastery of 5FDP’s songwriting is a gift that lays the foundation for building a deep connection with fans. A formula that so accurately expresses hard truth, reality, deep felt pain, and all the right reasons for anger is identifiably real and a straight up response to a world heavy and burdened with wrong reasons, confused conscience and a depleted sense of humanity. 5FDP has indeed tapped into that rare songwriting chemistry and have displayed heart with a sense of conscience proving them worthy. This photographer tips her hat in a respectful nod and utters, “Nicely done guys, nicely done!”

5FDP kicked off their Co-Headlining fall tour with Volbeat  today September 16, 2014 with two more Aftershock bands as special guests, HELLYEAH as direct support and Nothing More as the opener.  Tour runs through to the end of October closing it out with the last two dates without Volbeat on the 28th in Broomfield, Colorado at KBPI’s Saints & Sinners Halloween Ball at the 1st Bank Center.
