Volbeat caught my attention last year at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California with an incredible live show. However, this year at Welcome to Rockville my attention was not only caught, but I was fully captured; Captured and conquered, conquered and taken prisoner by their distinctive Michael_Poulsen_H5A9044signature sound. The unique marriage of rockabilly and metal which is as powerful as it is distinctive and it, “KICKS ASS.”

Live, Volbeat is an immovable force not to be reckoned with. Saturday, April 25th at Metropolitan Park in Jacksonville, Florida the East Stage of Welcome to Rockville thundered alive to a modernized metal version of the tinny old West gunslinger anthem of the 1950’s style Westerns with a tune named after one of the most infamous gunslingers, “Doc Holiday.” “Doc Holiday” is one of the songs off Volbeat’s latest album, Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies on Vertigo/Universal Music released April 9th, 2013. Also included in the set list were a few more songs off the new album; “Lola Montez,” “Dead But Rising,” and “The Hangman’s Body Count.” *Full set list below.

Volbeat includes the three original members Michael Poulsen (Vocals, Guitar) formerly of Dominus, Anders Kjolholm (Bass), and Jon Larsen (Drums). The newest addition Rob Caggiano (Guitar)formerly of Anthrax, and The Damned Things, who in 2013 after producing Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies was asked to join the band. In a press release from February 4th, 2013 Caggiano said;Rob_Caggiano__H5A8804

After weeks of collaboration between Michael and I it became quite clear that we had an amazing creative chemistry together and a huge mutual respect for one another. It’s so refreshing and inspiring to be creative again on a songwriting level that words can’t even describe it and the vibe between Anders, Jon, Michael and I is just awesome. I’d say an artistic relationship like this one is very rare and it’s also something I don’t take for granted. When the guys asked me if I was interested in joining Volbeat the other day, my jaw just about hit the floor! It actually didn’t even register in my brain properly until the next morning but I gotta say, it also didn’t take me long to decide. It really isn’t the way I envisioned the rest of my year to play out but at the same time, THIS feels more “right” to me than anything I could have possibly imagined and I’m going for it!” — Rob Caggiano

With this flow of artistic chemistry, I for one am looking forward to my next Volbeat experience whether live show or new music Bring-It-On!
