We’ve all heard the joke: “What do you call a guy who hangs out with musicians?”  “The bass player!” Sometimes referred to as the “wannabe guitarist” or the “guy in the band groupies sleep with last.” Unfairly, the bass player, much like the late great comic Rodney Dangerfield, often gets no respect. But imagine a world of music without bass? Take it out of songs like “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Sharona,” “Runnin’ with the Devil” and “Take Me Out”—and they would be ruined forever. Bass is important. In some bands, it’s the secret weapon.  In others, it is the steady sound that drives songs from start to thundering finish. And the bass player, although often the butt of those stale jokes, is a vital part of all bands, regardless of genre.
